The River

Navigating the Currents: A Journey into Worker Placement with 'The River'

The River is the game that introduced my friends and me to the worker placement mechanism. We had been experiencing withdrawals from Catan because we realized we had a severe addiction to it and had to stop.

On the River, you will explore an untouched land as you float by on your ship. Each turn, you claim terrain along the banks, providing valuable resources.

Act quickly to secure the more productive plots. With these resources, you build homes for all the meeples on your ship.

I try to secure the first player token to have the first choice of the terrain tiles in the next round.

As you continue down the River, your crew members will settle and create their own homesteads.

The game ends when a player builds their fifth and final home or reaches the end of their River.

Overall, it is a relatively quick game that is satisfying to all involved, similar to Wingspan. You could win or lose and still have a good time.

Notes:

The River is a worker placement game for 2 to 4 players. Depending on how much table talk there is, it takes 30 to 45 minutes. Setup with help takes about 5 minutes, and clean up is easy because every part has its spot in the tray.
