Humpty Dumpty the classic nursery rhyme, which features the ill-fated character's fall from a wall, has sparked curiosity and debate among scholars and enthusiasts alike. Through our discussion, we delve into the origins and interpretations of this nursery rhyme, uncovering the layers of history, riddles, and myth that have contributed to its lasting appeal.

We begin our journey with the well-known version of Humpty Dumpty and then voyage back in time to uncover its possible historical connections. The discussion touches on a range of theories, including the fascinating suggestion that Humpty Dumpty was not an egg but a 17th-century cannon used during the English Civil War in Colchester. The cannon's demise, as well as the inability of the king's men to restore it, might have inspired the rhyme, suggesting a deeper historical context that has been lost over time.

However, the intrigue doesn't stop with cannons and sieges. We also discuss the claim made by Albert Jack in his 2008 book, which, despite its lack of concrete evidence, has added to the mythology surrounding Humpty Dumpty. Adding a layer of complexity, we reveal an even more unsettling rendition of the rhyme from 1842, which paints a picture far removed from the benign egg of contemporary interpretations.

In 1842, James Orchard Halliwell published a collected version as:

Humpty Dumpty lay in a beck.
With all his sinews around his neck;
Forty Doctors and forty wrights
Couldn't put Humpty Dumpty to rights!

But our episode isn't just about unraveling history; it's about reimagining it. We infuse the discussion with a dash of fantasy as we conceptualize a crossover that brings together the unlikeliest of allies: Bilbo Baggins and Nicolas Cage. This playful narrative envisions Bilbo tackling the riddle of Humpty Dumpty while Cage goes on a cinematic quest to decode the hidden meanings behind nursery rhymes. Our conversation culminates in the idea of an epic movie, "Humpty Dumpty: Resurrection of the Nursery Rhyme," where mystery and action intertwine with folklore.

As our episode unfolds, we not only entertain our audience with whimsical speculation but also invite them to ponder the power of stories and their evolution over time. From the dark origins of nursery rhymes to their transformation into cultural touchstones, we highlight the enduring fascination with uncovering hidden meanings and the joy of linking past and present through storytelling.
